Getting ready for opening day on July 15
With opening day less than three weeks away, Tillamook, Jamba, Calliope and Your Northwest Travel Mart are busy putting finishing touches on their retail spaces. While most of those names will be familiar, Calliope may be new – it’s an eclectic retail gift shop from the owners of PDX’s cc McKenzie apparel stores.

Watch new art installation in real time
Once open, the new Concourse E extension will double as a gallery for Jacob Hashimoto’s three-dimensional sculptures — canopies of kite-like discs that reflect the atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest and draw inspiration from his Japanese heritage.
The artist team is in Portland right now, installing the rods and kites for two large scale pieces: “The City” and “The Sky.” Check out the live webcam to watch the installation process for yourself.
Southwest gates get fit for safety
The Port of Portland project team and Southwest Airlines staff recently conducted a “fit test” at the six new gates on the Concourse E extension. Such a test ensures that the jet bridge aligns with the aircraft door, fuel ports and potable water hose reaches, and that all ground crews can work safely and efficiently around the aircraft. The report from the team? All gates from E6 to E12 passed the fit test with flying colors, another big step toward the safe opening of Concourse E.
New Concourse B
Demolition work continues
After saying #GoodbyeA, demolition work continues on the existing Concourse B, including the wall adjacent to the roadway. Next step: driving piles for the new Concourse B structure.

Flying in steel on the new parking garage
After completing the foundation for the new parking garage at PDX, construction crews are now flying in the steel. You can see the steel erection progress for yourself in the photo below.
New Main Terminal
Preparing to build a new roof at PDX
While passenger counts are historically low right now due to the coronavirus pandemic, we still expect passenger growth over the next 15 years. For this reason, the Port of Portland will start expanding PDX 150 feet to the west in Spring 2021, then installing a beautiful new wood roof over the terminal.
Due to its giant size, the sustainably-sourced wood roof will be built in sections at a new construction site just south of the Portland Airport Fire and Rescue building. It will then be transported in sections to the final position over the expanded terminal. To date, crews have placed about half of the 30,000 cubic yards of concrete for the new construction site.
The panoramic shot below shows about half of the area that’s being constructed upon which to build the terminal roof structure. The total concrete area will be 20 acres – or about the size of 300 tennis courts.
